Rules that matter in Stirling

Transit

Trains: two animals, free, on a lead

Under the National Rail conditions, which cover ScotRail services, you can bring up to two animals at no extra charge. The dog travels on a lead or in a pet carrier, at the station and on the train, and never on the seats. No animals in restaurant cars except assistance dogs, and staff can have an animal removed if its size or behaviour is a problem for other passengers.

Parks

Open country: a short lead near livestock, and from April to July for nesting birds

The Scottish Outdoor Access Code covers walking beyond the town's parks, on farmland, moor and shore. Never let a dog worry farm animals, and don't take it into a field with lambs, calves or other young stock. In the breeding season, usually April to July, keep it on a short lead or close at heel on moorland, in forests, on grassland and along loch and sea shores. Keep it close where other people are, and pick up in any public open place.

Parks

Fouling: an £80 fixed penalty

Stirling Council warns owners who don't pick up that they risk an £80 fine. Its Community Safety Team patrols parks, paths and playing fields, educating first and issuing fixed penalty notices to repeat offenders. There are over a thousand dog-waste or dual-use bins across the council area.

Season

Heat: before 9am or after 5pm

The Scottish SPCA says most dogs are comfortable walking between 15°C and 25°C, and any temperature below 20°C is fine. On a hot day walk before 9am or after 5pm and skip the middle of the day. If you can't hold your hand on the tarmac for five seconds, it's too hot for paws. Cool, fresh water, and never a hot car.
